SKRAPPER AS ART

SKRAPPER is the brainchild of famed U.S. contemporary artist, William Quigley. Created in New York City 1999 along with musician Pete Francis, founder of the band Dispatch.

Quigley began his artistic career with a sellout show in Philadelphia, right out of college in 1985 at the Henry McNeil Gallery alongside Andy Warhol. In the early 1990s, he moved to Los Angeles working on the sets of music videos with Madonna, Prince, Tom Petty, Paula Abdul, Jane’s Addiction, Dispatch, OutKast, and Ice Cube.

Moving back to NY in 1999, Quigley hosted an art opening on his birthday April 29 exhibiting portraits of JFK and John F Kennedy Jr. through George Magazine at the Starrett Lehigh building in Chelsea NY. He convinced 2 friends new brands Grey Goose Vodka and Red Bull to sponsor the opening . And offered 10 female fashions models prints of his art to wear t shirts and hand painted skrapper skirts while serving drinks. The introduction thus created the first Grey Goose, Red Bull cocktail, and the Skrapper brand was born.

In 2005 Skrapper, Eric Weinrib and Uncle Funkys Jeff Gaites organized a show at Raasi Mazdak, Neil Meyer’s Milk Studio called “Boarding for Breast Cancer” with Sony Pictures “Lords of Dogtown.” The show was a huge success starting a trend in the NY art scene for collectible skateboards. Gaites and Quigley curated over 100 artists including Jeff Koons, Peter Beard, Swoon, 50cent, Julian Schnabel, Michael Halsband, Marc Chiat, Danny Clinch, Barry McGee, Andy Warhol Foundation, etc to create boards donated by Tony Alva.
